Why Do They Do Animal Abuse?

For my research, I found that 71% of domestic violence victims claims that their abuser also abuses pet animals, in a survey conducted by humane.org.

I conducted a survey to 91 respondents to get peoples opinions about cat abuse, they’re mostly aged more than 40. They think animal abuse is a problem, and most respondents know what is animal abuse. They think the age that mostly abuse animals are 20-30 years old.

“Most respondents are adults above 40 years old today.”

“Many believe young adults (age 20-30) are most likely to abuse animals.”

“Majority said they would report animal abuse if witnessed.”

Interviewing The Experts

To get more accurate information, I interviewed two animal experts.

The first expert was Fiolita Berandhini Saichu from Animals Don’t Speak Human, an organization that focuses on protecting animals.

She explained that teenagers are often the ones who abuse animals the most. This can happen because their parents didn’t teach them to care for animals, or because they were influenced by people around them. If they don’t learn to be kind, they might pass the same behavior on to their own children someday.

My second expert was Anisa Ratna Kurnia from Natha Satwa Nusantara, an agency that works to protect domestic animals.

She said that in Indonesia, the government still doesn’t treat animal abuse as an important issue.

Because the country is dealing with big problems like poverty and corruption, animal welfare is often ignored. Even though there’s already a law, the punishment is still very light—only a fine of Rp 2,000,000 and 3 to 9 months in prison. If someone kills several animals, the sentence might be a little over one year.

Helping Street Cats Through a School Bazaar

For my action project, I held a small bazaar to raise money for a street cat feeder.

I asked for permission from the General Affairs (GA) team to put up posters around the school to promote the event.

The bazaar took place on Monday and Friday. After it ended, I donated all the profit to StreetFeeder BSD. The money will help them buy food and supplies to rescue more cats from going hungry.

Conclusion

To sum up my project, I learned many new things.
I found out that cat abuse doesn’t only mean hitting or hurting a cat. It also includes neglect (like not giving food or care) and emotional abuse (like yelling or ignoring the cat all the time).

I also learned that people who are mean to animals can sometimes hurt other people too—like in domestic violence—if they don’t stop.

Lastly, I discovered that the Indonesian government already has a law to stop animal abuse. But sadly, the punishment is still very light.
